It is popular belief that this building was constructed by
Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife
Arjumand Bano Begum [Mumtaz Mahal] between 1632 and 1648
though there are disputes over the time of death of Mumtaz
Mahal and construction of the building and existence of the
building as there is considerable population which believe
that site was an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva
and was renovated as tomb by king.
