These
island cave temples are dedicated to Hindu Gods. During the
time of Portuguese possession [16th Century] name of island
was changed to Elephanta from Gharapuri. There are seven caves
on two hills, but only three are open for the public. The most
significant one Mahesha-Murti Cave. Elephanta caves are among
the start tourist attractions of Mumbai as this also provide
pleasure of sea journey.
Elephanta caves are on the list of World Heritage of UINESCO
and are one of magnificent illustration of rock-cut sculpture
in India. Maharashtra Tourism Development corporation is
organizing an annual festival "Elephanta Dance Festival" in
the month of February.
