In the Sanskrit language "Katak" means a government seat and for more than nine centauries (up to 1948) city was the capital of Orissa and even today is along with capital city Bhubaneshwar is known as the Twin city of Orissa.

History says city was founded way back in 989 AD by Keshari dynasty King Nrupa Keshari, hence this oldest city of country is also known as Millennium city. City is situated between rivers Mahanadi and Kathajodi and in the ancient times was named as Abhinab Baranasi (Newtype of Baranasi).

City is halt for the trains running on Chennai - Kolkatta rail route.
